Static IP
A static IP address will never change and does not require a PPoE client to log in and obtain an IP address. With a static connection, the IP address that is assigned to you will always stay the same. With a dynamic IP address, supplied with SBC's advertised packages, you are frequently assigned a new IP address. Dynamic IP addresses will therefore change when the connection is being reestablished. It is not, therefore, "always on". Dynamic IP is not the ideal connection type for many reasons: it precludes many Internet applications, such as connecting to the computers on your DSL connection remotely from applications like PCAnywhere or Windows Terminal Server, and it makes Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) more difficult to create and maintain. You also cannot run mail, web and other Internet server applications.
