Nan Verkaik

Nan Verkaik is a teacher at Santa Barbara High School in Santa Barbara, California where she teaches physical education, at-risk students and coaches boys' and girls' volleyball. School responsibilities include department chair, Channel League coordinator and a member of the CIF Boys' Volleyball Advisory Committee.

Previously, Nan taught special education and coached swimming at Santa Barbara High School. Coaching experience includes, age group swimming, high school swimming in Santa Barbara at Santa Barbara High School, and Lincoln High School in Tacoma, Washington, Special Olympics in Tacoma, Washington and Santa Barbara. She has also coached, men's basketball, and track at the University of Puget Sound. Coaching successes include a fifth place finish at Junior Nationals in boys' Volleyball, a second place team finish in the top division of CIF swimming and a CIF Girls' Volleyball Championship in 2000. She was also high school coach of the year in 2000-2001 for the City of Santa Barbara. Four of her teams have won the CIF scholastic achievement award for their sport. In High School, Nan played on the volleyball, basketball, softball and swimming teams at Santa Barbara High School. In college she played on the volleyball, basketball, softball, track and field hockey teams at the University of Puget Sound.

Nan holds a B.A. in education from the University of Puget Sound and an M.A. in Curriculum and Instruction from California Lutheran University. She has co-authored Judicious Coaching, papers on media studies and at-risk students and presented the results of her work at international conferences.
