Class Policies and Course Description
United States History
Mr. Green
This course of
United States History emphasizes the 20th Century, from the age of
Post-Civil War Industrialization through our own Information Age of
Y2K. Methods of
instruction will emphasize a “hands-on” approach, using learning centers,
historical inquiry, historical simulations, role-playing, journal writing,
dramatic productions, oral interviews, research, exams and discussion/debate.
Traditional reading assignments and lecture will also be employed in this
course.
Homework must be
on time for full credit. A 10%
reduction per day will be given to late work.
A maximum of 50% credit will be given for assignments over three days
late, but not more than two weeks late.
Assignments and
tests are weighted by Mr. Green assigning a certain number of points to each.
Grades are determined by a student’s cumulative number of points,
overall percentage and class comparison. Students
are encouraged to keep track of their grades so that they will be aware of their
standing at all times. Every two to
three weeks Mr. Green will post grades by student identification number in the
classroom.
Progress reports
will be sent out at the midpoint of each quarter to students who are in academic
trouble or are high achievers.
Participation is
an important component of your grade. Appropriate
behavior and positive, intelligent class involvement will have a positive effect
on your grade. Each quarter 200
points are reserved for the participation grade.
Students will
receive a copy of the McDougal Littell, The Americans- Reconstruction through
the 20th Century. Cover
the text. Resource links for your text are found online at http://www.mcdougallittell.com/amhist/am20link/am20self.htm
.
Students will be
required to keep an organized notebook with the handouts, writings, papers, and
historical journals. DO NOT THROW
AWAY PAPERS!
Extra credit opportunities will occasionally be announced for interested
students by Mr. Green. Extra
credit will not be created as a favor to any individual to boost a sagging
grade.
School policy will be followed when cheating occurs on any assignment,
exam, paper etc. “Cheating” also includes letting someone copy or
duplicate materials intended for individuals to complete. Changing font on a word processor does not constitute ones’
own work.
It is the responsibility of the student to make up all work assignments
during and after an absence. The
best policy is to call in or have a friend get class assignments.

It is also the
student’s responsibility to report to Mr. Green before class upon the day of
return. Arrangements will be made
for missed homework, class assignments and tests.
If the class is not meeting
the day you return to school, be sure to turn in homework and get the past
assignments anyway.
If a student
misses only the day of a test, the student will be required to make up the test
upon return - no matter if that is a class meeting day or not - and take the
test during lunch, a free period, or after school.
The make-up time must be arranged with Mr. Green.
Get to class on
time. Unless you have a valid
written excuse, just be seated and
take the tardy gracefully.
I encourage
participation, legal freedom of
speech, and a free exchange of ideas, BUT do not cross the line and become a
rude, obnoxious, disruptive, counter-productive menace to the American
educational system.
If you are having “one of those days,” let me know before class begins so that I can accordingly make allowances.
Please sign below,
acknowledging that you have read and understand these policies.
Also, please have your parent or guardian read and sign.
Return the signed class policy sheet to Mr. Green.
After being checked-off, place this sheet in the front of your notebook.
