I.  Classroom Lessons on the Web

A. SCORE: Schools of California Online Resources in Education
This site is sponsored by CTAP, and features Resources and Activities for all grade levels in Social Science, Language Arts, Science and Math.  All are correlated to the California Framework.

http://www.SCORE.k12.ca.u

Hint:  Whether using Internet lessons as a teaching aid, as a learning center, or in the lab a lesson with objectives, tested sites, and written work is the best bet for success.

B. Political Cartooning
A critical thinking exercise in Government, Politics, and Current Events.

Fact:  Almost any picture/graphic on the web can be printed on an overhead, and can certainly be saved and projected for a class lesson or project.

Click here for the Political Cartooning Assignment

C.     Historical Interviews
An oral interview project conducted by students, which pairs them with community members who have lived the history they are studying.  The project also includes submitting the transcription of the interviews for online posting.

D.     Virtual Stock Exchange
Log on at http://www.virtualstockexchange.com  .  This excellent stock market challenge site has incredible resources.  Individuals, teams, and classes are given $500,000 of funny money per account (free registration) to invest in the actual market.  Quotes, charts, research, buys, sells are all real-time. The site keeps track of every transaction, and provides professional charts and readouts.  The only bad/good aspect of this wonderful stock site is that all gains and losses are purely fictional.

Click here for my handouts using Virtual Stock Exchange

II. Using Search Engines for Personal and Classroom Research
If you are designing a lesson for your class or lab, a good search engine, and good search strategies can save you time, frustration, and perhaps some of your sanity.

My favorite search engine for web pages, text and images is currently GOOGLE.  A great way to save time is to download the Google Toolbar, which will continuously display the Google search below your address location on an Internet Explorer browser.

A KID-SAFE search engine is Yahooligans, found at http://www.yahooligans.com .  This search site can be set as your classroom homepage, and will allow kids to search safely, pursue educational links, filter out questionable materials, and has online lessons and tips for teachers. Go on and TRY TO FIND SOMETHING BAD…I DARE YOU L

Metacrawler (http://www.go2net.com/) and Dogpile (http://www.dogpile.com) are three search engines, which cross-reference numerous search engines and compile the results of your search.  The result is usually a better and more precise list of hits you are looking for.

Fact : Teaching can be greatly enhanced by using updated materials in handouts, overheads and projections.

Hint:  Try saving graphics and/or current event text to include in your handouts.  There is no reason (with the Internet) that you cannot keep all lessons updated and fresh off the press J

III. Educational Sites for Personal and Classroom Use
Most newer textbook publications have web sites with resources, and enrichment activities. Here is an example of the sites for my courses:

US History
McDougal Littell online resources for texts.

AP Government
Wilson text site for Political Science
