Equipment Needed
  • Rifle (any caliber except 50BMG) and Rests. Ramped scope bases help keep the target centered in the scope range of vertical adjustment (20 MOA ramp works well for .308).
  • 30 rounds ammunition for Match, about that many for sighters
  • Eye and Ear Protection
  • Open Bolt Indicators (available for $1 at the range)
  • Spotting Scope
  • Chair (not all shooting benches have stools on both sides)

  • Match Fees
  • Three 10 target matches are held, each match is $3.
  • After practice, participants can elect not to compete in the match
Match fee is collected at this time. (There is no fee collected for the practice session.)

  • Targets
  • Targets are 5/8-in. armor plate; feet are 2 inches x3 inches. Ram weighs 22 pounds.
  • Targets are ½ scale (see at www.nrahq.org/compete/dept-silh.asp
  • Ram is 16 inches wide by 13.5 inches high; Turkey is 9 inches wide by 12 inches high; Pig is 11 inches wide by 7.25 inches high; Chicken is 7 inches wide by 5.75 inches high

    Scoring

  • 1 Ram for 1 point, 2 Turkeys each 2 points, 3 Pigs each 3 points, 4 Chickens each 4 points: Total Possible 30 points

  • Course of Fire
  • 15 minutes per match includes unlimited sighters, then 10 consecutive shots for score,
one at each of 10 targets, left to right. Targets shot out of sequence do not score.
Rifles may not be substituted for reasons of mechanical failure during match.

  • Targets must fall to score, the exception being the Ram target, where
unmistakably solid impact with small caliber does score. Indirect hits do not score (dirt spray).

  • There are generally enough participants so that those who are not shooting
can spot for those who are. A good spotter with a good scope is a real benefit.

  • After the competition we hold an optional "Fun" shoot.
Target is a rectangular plate 6 inches x 8 inches with a hole drilled in the center,
now reduced to ¾-inch. Five shots; no sighters: a round through the hole wins,
    with no other scoring criteria.

  • Because the purpose of this event is to enjoy and promote the challenging sport
of long-range precision shooting, we practice and encourage information sharing.
We feel this adds to the enjoyment of the sport, steepens the learning curve for new participants,
and drives the limits of excellence.
